According to Ramayana, the great epic, Bandhavgarh was gifted to Lakshmana by his elder brother Rama after the battle of Lanka. The existing national park is named after this legendary Bandhavgarh Fort, which is situated on a hillock of the Vindhya range in Umaria. People often associate origin of the name “Kanha” from the Kanhar River or the dark black soil found in this area. Before the british took over the land in 1818, it was ruled by the Gond Kings and prior to them by the Rajput dynasties. This area was upgraded as ‘The Banjar Valley Reserve’ in 1933 and later was declared as National park in 1955. Eventually the park became the first in the league of Tiger reserves in the country. Presently, the reserve encompasses 1949 sq kilometres of serene forestland.
This park was the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling’s classic “The Jungle Book” and is today home to 22 species of mammals and 230 species of birds. The last preserve of the rare barasingha ( hard ground adapted swamp deer) and other species of wildlife include jackal, wild boar, cheetal, sambhar, dhole (Indian wild dog) Indian fox, sloth beer, leopard, and tiger.
